Start of novel project examining the role of Matrix Gla protein in osteoarthritis
In a novel project funded by the Dutch arthritis foundation (Cindy Boer, PI Joyce van
Meurs), we will examine the role of Matrix Gla Protein in osteoarthritis. We hypothesise
that decreased function of MGP, either by a genetic defect, or impaired VitK function,
results in a higher risk for (progression of) osteoarthritis, by stimulation of calcification
and/or bone formation. We here propose to examine this in established human in vitro
models as well as in vivo. These results will have clinical implications given the
potential for vitamin K to be a simple and inexpensive therapy for osteoarthritis.
